Neuwerk is a tidal island located in the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park (Hamburgisches Wattenmeer) 13 km northwest of Cuxhaven. It can be reached by ferry from Cuxhaven at high tide or by feet, horse, carriage or tractor from Sahlenburg at low tide.

During the summer season refuges for shipwrecked mariners or tideland walkers are mounted along the path to Neuwerk as a security measure for walkers overtaken by the high tide.

Walking the tideland provides an impression of almost untouched nature.

One should avoid tideland crossing in misty weather conditions. There is no sight and one might get lost. Nevertheless mist is a very photogenic subject.

Neuwerk lighthouse is the major landmark in this region. Built in the 14th century as a defence and watch tower its last navigational light could be seen from a distance of 16 nautical miles. In 2014 the operation ceased. The current fixed white light serves as a private light for decorative purposes only.

The next major landmark is the Radar tower at the western coast of Neuwerk. It controls the Elbe Weser shipping traffic.

There are two harbours for ferries and small ships visiting Neuwerk.

Sea marks guide the vessels to the island.

Remember, Neuwerk is a tidal island. Sometimes there is no water to navigate.

There are bathing facilities on Neuwerk. They sometimes miss water too.

Neuwerk grows and extends to the east. Salt marshes turn into firm ground over time.

Migratory birds like this area and make a break on their way to the north in spring or to the south in autumn.

Every sunset is different. One can’t catch them all – an invitation to return.
